The Nintendo Switch version of the game has a fixed 1080p resolution in docked mode (720p in portable mode) with that solid 30FPS framerate (thanks to Digital Foundry for the numbers). However, even with these measured cuts to the game, its overall high quality still shines through. However, on the bright side of things, the Nintendo Switch version of the game does include all of the DLC released for the game, and unlike the Nintendo Switch releases of the Bioshock series, Borderlands adds in gyroscopic motion control. The Nintendo Switch version of the game drops the framerate drops down to 30FPS from those versions' 60FPS, and while those versions had 4-player split-screen co-op, the Nintendo Switch version gets dropped down to only 2 players on split-screen (though up to four total can join in online). However, this move has come with a few caveats. However, 2020 is the first time the series has come to a Nintendo platform in the form of its port to the Nintendo Switch, with this release including all of the game's DLC content. The first game in this series was originally released in 2009 on multiple platforms, with a remastered version of the game seeing release in 2019. ![]() ![]() This combined with a comic book-esque cel shaded art style and a story and tone that combined a dark and gritty post-apocalyptic off-world dystopia with a tongue-in-cheek irreverent sense of humor to create an experience that was extremely unique and surprisingly compelling. Note: This game is included in Borderlands Legendary Collection, along with Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.īorderlands and its sequels are First-Person Shooters that are well-known for having popularized the term “looter shooter”, as these games took that First-Person gameplay and added an open map (not quite open-world, but close), and a structure and gameplay loop closer to the likes of Diablo, where enemies drop all manner of various guns, each with its own unique combination of modifications and stats, resulting in literally millions of different weapons for players to discover and outfit themselves with. The remaster also adds six new legendary weapons, but none of them dropped during the 20 hours I played so far (which is normal, since high-end items usually show up later).Players: 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Online), 2-4 Co-Op (Online) It’s also really nice to not have to manually pick up ammunition and money on the ground, though you still have to manually grab both from chests and lockers. Inventory management is also better because you can mark weapons as junk and sell them in bulk at vending machines, while locking them helps you avoid accidentally dropping or selling stored gear that you wanted to hold onto. Not having to pull up the full map in the menu to ensure you’re heading the right way makes a positive difference in the general flow of the missions. I remember having to constantly rely on the compass, only to realize that the road had forked and my destination was only reachable by zigzagging and backtracking. First and foremost, the addition of the Borderlands 2-style minimap is extremely welcome. “Other improvements have been made which help to modernize the original in some respects. Consoles do benefit from 60fps gameplay, though, and the PC version is a free upgrade for owners of the original. ![]() That might add vibrancy to the environments, structures, characters, and weapons, but the graphical style didn’t necessarily need a refresh anyway. There’s unfortunately no HDR support here, but the console versions will have it (we haven’t gotten our hands on those yet), along with 4K resolutions on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. On the other, it means there’s little reason to return if you’ve already completed the first adventure on Pandora. Those with keen eyes may be able to see a difference, but switching between Ultra and High settings on PC seemed like a wash to me. That’s both good and somewhat disappointing: On the one hand, it reconfirms that Borderlands still looks and plays the part a decade later. It looked great in 2009, and it still looks great nearly 10 years later as a slightly brighter experience with better, steadier framerate and a few minor tweaks. With its distinctive hand-drawn cartoon art style, Borderlands is an odd candidate for a remaster because it’s look is frankly hard to improve upon.
